I lead the Distance Learning Mentoring Group, which supports MCC
faculty who are developing their first online course. We explore pedagogical
approaches, technology options, and research findings regarding the best way
to deliver distance education. My thirty years of teaching as an MCC Life
Science faculty member make me aware of the challenges faculty face in the
classroom. In 1998, I developed an award-winning online biology course and
taught it for six years. This experience prepared me to guide faculty
through the challenges of delivering a quality online course offering.
Information regarding this online biology course is available at
http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/~johnson/online100.html
I work with faculty on an individual basis when they need help
creating or editing teaching materials for online delivery. This may be for
a traditional (face-to-face) course, a hybrid class (offered partly
face-to-face and partly online), or a completely online course. Faculty are
often interested in using the flexible features of WebCT course management
software. We work together to examine the options available and put them in
place. Options include a password-protected site where students can view
their grades at any time, online quizzes that are available to the student
at the time of the instructor's choosing, automatic grading and posting into
the grade book for online quizzes, discussion boards for asynchronous
discussions, etc. Faculty can control student access (as to time, date, and
frequency) to their course materials using WebCT. In addition, I can show
faculty how to software to create online games to enhance student mastery of
material. To see a crossword puzzle example, go to

It is very exciting to see the growth that faculty experience during their
time in the Distance Learning Mentoring Group! Faculty begin their semester
concerned about their ability to transfer the experience they have acquired
teaching in the classroom to teaching online. Faculty inevitably end the
semester confident they are able to create an online course offering of
which they can be proud.
I have helped faculty develop online courses in communication, business,
computer science, mathematics, music, English, criminal justice, nursing,
psychology, reading, foreign language and other disciplines. They are
enthusiastic regarding the vast array of options available for course
delivery; the collegiality that develops with colleagues who are
experienced at teaching online; and the extent of hardware, software, and
instruction available through MCC's Center for Teaching and Learning. To
