EBRARY TOOL FOR LOCATING LIBRARY BOOKS (full text!) FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER – OR YOUR STUDENTS’ COMPUTERS

Lorna Peralta, librarian at our Red Mt. campus, showed faculty how to use Ebrary.  With this tool, available from the MCC library website, you can set up a virtual bookshelf for your course. Students can set up their own virtual bookshelves too.  You and they can bookmark specific sections in books to read and/or highlight specific paragraphs.

To get to the Ebrary tool to locate books:

  1. Click on the link to the MCC library website

  1. Select the Electronic Resources heading

  1. On the next screen that appears, locate the Ebooks heading and select Ebrary.

  1. The next screen that appears will welcome you to Ebrary. There are videos that take you through an online training session, though the software is very easy to use.
  2.

  1. You will need to download the free Ebrary reader (you will be prompted to do this the first time you use Ebrary). Once you have downloaded the reader, if you are accessing the Ebrary site from off campus, you will be asked to log on. Use your MCC username and password (the one you use to get into your MCC email account).

  1. When you type a term that you want to search into the Ebrary search field, it will bring up the full text of books that are pertinent.

  1. When you find a reference that interests you, clicking on it will make the table of contents visible, with links to each chapter. You can print up to 5 pages at a time (and can print 8 different times in one session, for a total of 40 pages).  You can use the highlighter tool to highlight specific words or sections of text. Right clicking on a word brings up an online dictionary for that word. You can save your highlights and add your own notes.

LOCATING JOURNAL ARTICLES FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER – OR YOUR STUDENTS’ COMPUTERS

Students and faculty can research topics from the comfort of their own computer by using the various databases available from the MCC library website.  Options are shown below.

For example, if you want students to read articles written from opposing viewpoints, you can access “Opposing Viewpoints” articles under the Humanities/Reference heading. You can access current news events from the Newspapers heading, etc.

EMBEDDING PERSISTENT LINKS IN YOUR WEBPAGE OR ONLINE COURSE

MCC has recently acquired the ability to let faculty create persistent links to specific articles for their students (thank you Wade Harris for making this possible!). Called PURL’s (Persistent Uniform Resource Locators), these links allow the student to access a specific article by clicking on your hyperlink. The student doesn’t’ have to spend time searching through various website/databases to find the article you want them to read.  They just click on your hyperlink and the article is there. The resources that can be used in this fashion are limited to those that MCC and/or the district owns (includes all the above resources shown on the MCC library website).

Note: If you DO want students to search for resources on a specific topic, you can make the persistent link to an electronic resource site where they can do the searching themselves.

Complete directions for setting up a PURL are available at http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/library/Reference/PURLinstructions.rtf

If you have questions on how to make the persistent link (put a hyperlink on a webpage or in a webct course), contact Marlene Forney at mforney@mail.mc.maricopa.edu

WEBCT’s GROUP MANAGER TOOL

Melanie discussed the group manager tool. You can create discussion topics, chat rooms, or assignments for students in different groups. The instructor can assign the students manually to their respective groups, WebCT can randomly assign students to a group, or students can sign up for the group of their choice.  This option would be very useful for making a separate group of students in an honors class.  More details on the Group Manager tool can be found at
