The name "podcast" is a combination of "iPod" and "broadcast". Podcasts can be played by your computer or any MP3 player (such as an iPod or video phone). Donna Gaudet has been leading a faculty learning community group (FPLC) at MCC on podcasting this year. She has discovered a wealth of podcasts that are available for faculty to utilize in their courses. One is example is Stanford at iTunesU (http://itunes.stanford.edu/). Donna provided two hand-outs, one of which has a directory of educational podcasts.

Note: Maricopa will be connected to iTunesU in the fall. Faculty can use this podcatcher to deliver podcasts they create to their students.

Donna recommends not using a podcast for your online pilot semester next fall. However, you might want to add audio files your students access in their WebCT course. Audio files can be inserted in your course by recording them in Audacity and including a link to the file within your course. True podcasts are recorded and stored with a pocatcher service that the student subscribes to (such as iTunes). The students select the podcasts then want downloaded. Then the podcatcher pushes the podcasts to them, automatically downloading them to the student's computer or MP3 player for listening. Podcasts would need to be updated each semester, whereas audio files would not.

Donna has a website with more information on podcasting and useful links:  http://del.icio.us/dgaudet/podcasting
