FAQ about FPLCs

I notice in the application form for the FLC that the deadline is open
until the FLC is filled. Does this mean that I could apply when I get
back to Arizona, or should I apply now?

In reviewing the information you sent on the Learning Communities Program, I am not clear on how I might fit into one of them. The focus is faculty and faculty professional growth. Could you please clarify this? Are you really inviting staff to become a part?

The FLC looks quite interesting to me, and I'd like to participate, but my major concern is time (hmm, that makes me oh, so unique) since this will be my first year on committees as well (he's starting his second year). I really don't want to pass up this opportunity, though. Do you have any sense of the time commitment involved?

We do meet every two weeks, which is not too much, but still enough to feel like you can get to know the other people in the "community." As a group, we can determine how much or how little we'd like to accomplish--the idea of a learning community is that it's really self-directed. We as a group, decide what our goals are and how much we'd like to accomplish.

I notice there are meetings every couple of weeks, along with retreats
at the beginning and end of the academic year, and I'd assume there
would be some special projects along the way throughout the year.
Also, do we need to focus attention or effort on any particular
course?

I do hope we can actually do some sort of teaching project (but only as ambitious as you'd like it to be) for our classroom, because ultimately, what's the point if it doesn't translate into our classrooms? And yeah, it's only your 2nd year...but that means you haven't gotten TOO jaded...yet. ;)

As you can see from the forwarded email, ... [we] have been discussing a ... project for MCC students. It may well be too late to organize a faculty learning community about this topic, but I did want to at least inquire about the possibility. Certainly, there is a large body of research about the subject, and the end result of any study would have to be a proposal for college implementation. How do I propose a new FPLC?

We have been asked to assess our FLC and wondered if you have been conducting any outcomes assessment and if so, would you be willing to share some of your strategies/tools/ideas with us?
