FPLC Facilitator Expectations

Facilitators are critical to the success of FPLCs. In some ways, their role is like that of an instructor for a graduate seminar with responsibility for coordinating activities, assigning initial readings, motivating participation and ensuring that all important aspects of the topic are considered, and keeping the FPLC goals in sight. In others, they are members of the group promoting group consensus, sharing responsibility for leadership, and allowing divergent paths to be considered.

FPLC facilitators are expected to:

  • Set FPLC objectives with the Director.
  • Determine issues and topic to address with Director.
  • Lead the FPLC.
  • Determine selection procedures with Director.
  • Help with FPLC public relations with CTL staff.
  • Manage FPLC budget with Director.
  • Encourage connections and bonding within community.
  • Initiate partnerships where appropriate with Director.
  • Engage broader community when possible with Director.
  • Work with CTL staff or other departments as necessary with Director.
  • Determine meeting and activity schedule with members.
  • Identify guest presenters or discussion leaders for each meeting with members.
  • Determine social events with members.
  • Determine travel plans with members.
  • Organize initial readings and focus book.
  • Guide members's selection of focus course, intervention, assessment, etc. with CTL staff.
  • Plan presentation event(s) with Director.
  • Guide member documentation of teaching and learning projects.
  • Consult with members on publication and scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Assess faculty development within FPLC with Director.
  • Recognize member work with Director to Administration, Chairs, and colleagues.
  • Facilitators will receive reassigned time

Facilitators will receive reassigned time in an amount to be negotiated with the FPLC Director and the VPAA (usually 3 hours). Facilitators will be supported to attend the FPLC Facilitator Institute offered by the International Alliance of Teacher Scholars (www.iats.com)
