Turnitin®

What is Turnitin®

Turnitin® is a service that is used by thousands of institutions in over 80 countries.  It has a range of options, but the primary tool is its Plagiarism Prevention component, which has been purchased by Mesa Community College.  Other services are already provided to MCC faculty through WebCT, and Turnitin® is WebCT compatible.  More about this compatibility and how to use it is forthcoming.

The Turnitin® Plagiarism Prevention tool is a text-matching program that matches uploaded papers into a massive database consisting of three main parts:

  • billions of pages from both current and archived Internet sources
  • millions of student papers previously submitted to Turnitin.com
  • commercial databases of published journal articles and periodicals

Who can use it?

If you are teaching at MCC, you may obtain the account ID and password to use it for your MCC classes in softsense (CTL software distribution).  Any class in any discipline that requires research papers can benefit from this tool by dramatically reducing and verifying both intentional and unintentional plagiarism.

What else can Turnitin® do?

The Turnitin® website has a lot of information available on:

  • plagiarism
  • news reports about the epidemic of cheating
  • how to use it as a teaching tool
  • a Research Resources page to help students understand plagiarism, developing good research and writing skills, fair use, public domain, and copyright laws,

How do I get started?

To get started with Turnitin®, simply go to turnitin.com  and set up a user profile using this Instructor Guide:

Here is a sample Student Handout for you to use and to provide the students with the information they will need to set up their own user profiles, enroll in the class, and submit papers:
