Easy FREE Digital Show and Tell

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Think you can show it better than write it? Sometimes an idea you want to present to an audience is worth the words you put down on paper, but not so much the trouble of thinking about WHICH words you want. A fun project for you and/or your students is to say what you mean visually. Anyone who has a computer can make a digital media presentation if they have a cache of digital photographs. These could be photos they have collected from their own camera or they can be photos collected from the web under a fair use creative commons license. (more…)

WebCT Tip #4 - When Students Say “I click the document link and get a blank screen”

Monday, January 29th, 2007

The #1 issue we see with students goes something like this:

  • You (the instructor) upload a document (Word, Powerpoint) file and place a link in the Course Content area of your WebCT course.
  • You instruct your students to click the document link and print, download, or view the file.
  • Students attempt to do so and get a blank screen indicating they can’t see the document or it isn’t there.

The Issue - This is a security problem with Internet Explorer and cannot be fixed by WebCT. (more…)

WebCT Tip #3 - Paging Options

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Paging Preferences - refers to the number of items in a list that will appear on the screen inside WebCT at any one time. Paging Preferences appear in lots of places such as the File Manager, Gradebook, Mail tool, Discussion Area, etc… If you have ever thought that you were missing data or not able to see all your students or posts, then you have run into Paging Preferences. The icon to change these preferences, when you have exceeded the default of 10 records, looks like a little stack of paper and appears on the bottom right side of the screen.

WebCT now allows you to set your default Paging Preferences globally so that you never have to change them again (unless you want to). Here’s how:

  1. From the Course List page in WebCT, look for a link to My Settings.
  2. Click My Tool Options.
  3. Scroll down the page to the very bottom and look for the section called Paging.
  4. Type the number of records per page that you would like for your new default (999 is the max).
  5. Click Save to update.
  6. Click the My Profile tab then click Done to return to the Course List page.

That’s all there is to it! You may never have to reset your paging options again.

Monday, January 15th, 2007

WebCT Tip #1 - Sending Suggestions to WebCT

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Did you know…you can request changes to future versions of WebCT by submitting an online form?

  • Visit http://www.webct.com/suggestions and complete the online form.
  • Select CE Enterprise License 6.X as the product
  • Remember that WebCT and Blackboard merged, so you will see a lot of references to Blackboard on the site.

Some suggestions that have been made already include:

  • Automatic total for calculated columns
  • Hiding the instructor attachments in an assignment once it’s been
    published
  • Have the most recent announcement appear at the top of the list within
    the announcements tool
  • Allow co-instructors to delete each other’s announcements
  • Have attachments appear within Create Printable View within the Mail
Tool (they download in the Discussions Tool but not the mail tool)
  • Simpler access to Survey Results
  • Add setting to discussions area to release the column in the gradebook
    (added with App Pack 1)
  • Hide the ‘To’ textbox within the Mail tool to prevent confusion -
WebCT Mail is for internal messaging only, it’s not e-mail

The company does pay attention to the site and use the information to plan future updates so contribute your ideas often!
