Course Management System Research - Moodle
Project Summary: This is effort to evaluate the Open Source Moodle software. This is not an initiative to adopt the software at this time--just evaluation.
Project Goals
- To continue to explore other methods of electronic course delivery
- To potentially participate with the community of open source software developers contributing to the further development of Moodle
Relation to CTL Department Plan Initiatives
Project Staff
- Jeffrey Anderson documents issues surrounding installation and overall workings of the software when it is installed on a test server
- Martin Lehner provides support for general Linux admin issues surrounding the support of the software in a test environment
- Paul Hickey helps set up and support the virtual server machine instances that the test implementation is run on
Project Timeline
- Moodle is mentioned in CTL staff meetings starting as early as 2005 as something too keep an eye on
- Moodle is demonstrated at a session at the 2006 MEC Conference. Jeff was in attendance at the session.
- Jeff's initial attempts of installing the software on arbitrary test servers begin in 2006
- First successful install of the software was completed in late 2006 and early 2007
Current Status
- Given the fact that time is directed at supporting the college's current commercial CMS, WebCT BB CE 6, this project will not get as much time as other projects.
Future Directions
- Jeffrey Anderson will continue to monitor the progress of the development of Moodle
Project Resources
- Staff time has been required to install and maintain the test environment where the software is contained
Project Outcomes
- CTL Staff is better advised on how the Moodle open source project is moving and in which direction
