Course Management System Research - Sakai

Project Summary: This is effort to evaluate the Open Source Sakai CMS software. This is not an initiative to adopt the software at this time--just evaluation.

Project Goals

  • To continue to explore other methods of electronic course delivery
  • To potentially participate with the community of open source software developers contributing to the further development of Sakai

Relation to CTL Department Plan Initiatives

Project Staff

  • Jeffrey Anderson documents issues surrounding installation and overall workings of the software when it is installed on a test server
  • Martin Lehner provides support for general Linux admin issues surrounding the support of the software in a test environment
  • Paul Hickey helps set up and support the virtual server machine instances that the test implementation is run on

Project Timeline

  • The sakai project was first investigated in 2004 as a way to become involved with a large movement and community of educational software developers wishing to produce a well-designed alternative to commercial online course management and delivery tools.
  • Melanie Kroening, Jeffrey Anderson, and Wade Harris from MCC ITS travel to the Univeristy of Arizona in Tucson in Fall 2004 to collaborate with UofA's efforts who were heading in a similar direction at the time
  • Melanie Kroening installed a few builds in a test environment in between the UofA visit and 2005-6
  • Jeffrey installed the latest build on a test server in 2007

Current Status

  • Given the fact that time is directed at supporting the college's current commercial CMS, WebCT/BB CE 6, this project will not get as much time as other projects.

Future Directions

  • Jeffrey Anderson has contacts at ASU who are experimenting with their own instance of Sakai and will keep tabs on what they are doing.

Project Resources

  • Staff time has been required to install and maintain the test environment where the software is contained

Project Outcomes

  • CTL Staff is better advised on how the sakai project is moving and in which direction
