FPLC Member Expectations

  • FPLC members are expected to be active, reliable, supportive, and contributing members of the FPLC.
We expect members to be flexible in scheduling and attending community events outside normal work hours if necessary. They must commit to attending seminars comprising 4-6 hours per month, to help build a safe support group for all participants, and to explore and discuss the literature related to your discipline and the FPLC topic.
  • FPLC members are encouraged and supported to conduct a project related to the FPLC topic.
We expect all members to focus on an idea emerging from the literature of the FPLC topic and encourage all members to select a focus course or or other college project for implementation. We will also encourage and support the assessment of the implementation of their idea.
  • FPLC members are expected to communicate publically the findings of their FPLC, their reflection on teaching and learning and their FPLC project.
We expect members to share literature reviews related to the FPLC. They must document their reflections on the FPLC topic and their implementation and assessment of their FPLC goals. All FPLC documentation will be made public to the local community via our website (CTLpedia) and at our annual teaching and learning conference. Support is available for those who wish to present their work at at a regional or national conference or those who wish to publish their work in a multidisciplinary or disciplinary journal. We hope that some will consider continuing their work with a campus or district grant or a sabbatical.

Facilitator Responsibilities

FPLC facilitators are responsible for leading a group of approximately 8-12 faculty and staff in a scholarly exploration of a specific topic for at least a year. Typical responsibilities include:

  • development of FPLC curriculum, ,
  • scheduling and coordination of activities,
  • participation in community work,
  • assessment, and documentation of FPLC outcomes.

In addition, facilitators have other expectations:

  • Facilitators are expected to develop their skills in leading and facilitating the communities through independent study and training, which will be provided.
  • Facilitators are expected to be active, reliable and contributing members of the FPLC Facilitator Community.
  • Facilitators serve in an advisory capacity with the FPLC Director on planning and implementation of the FPLC program.
  • They will also work with the FPLC Director to coordinate FPLC member participation in ETL 287, which members can submit for FPG.
  • Finally, facilitators will serve as the primary members of the Human Subjects Research - College Research Review Committee (CRRC) chaired by Ann Ewing.

This work will comprise about 90 hours of time for the semester and average 6 hours per week. A significant portion (at least one third) of this time will be spent leading and preparing for the biweekly, 2-hour FPLC meetings. In addition, there will be at least 6 hours per month spent preparing and participating in the monthly CRRC meetings. The balance of the time will be spent on the other duties described above.

The work for this FPLC may be done in conjunction with a co-facilitator with the understanding (by the VPAA and the FPLC director) that, although the co-facilitators will alternate payment between semesters, they will each perform the co-facilitator function for the entire academic year.

None of the duties described above are part of the regular duties of any faculty or staff member. The facilitators are committed to the goals of this program, which are connecting faculty and staff at MCC and engaging the community in making MCC a learning-centered institution, and have committed to work the extra hours to accomplish those goals.

VPAA Jim Mancuso has approved facilitator compensation equivalent to 3 load hours under the assumption that facilitator responsibilities are equivalent to teaching and preparing for a 3 credit class. Total pay for the semester will be $2,298 with an hourly rate of $25.50 based on 6 hours per week or 90 hours per semester.

The FPLC Director will supervise the work to be performed.
