Global Learning FPLC Background

The Global Learning category includes pages related to the Global Learning Faculty and Professional Learning Community (FPLC).

My Initial Views on Global Learning

The courses I teach focus heavily on increasing aware and inclusiveness of diverse cultural perspectives and using our society’s and our world’s diversity as a way to enrich our lives. I wholeheartedly support programs that “enhance awareness and promote a sense of inquiry about our complex world and intercultural issues through curriculum.” Examples of my involvement in such programs include the Teaching and Learning Communities (TLC) for Educators Program (team member), the Xalapa Study Abroad Program (program director), the English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement program (program coordinator), and MCC’s Global Learning Committee (member). My interest in the area of diversity and globalism is reflected not only in these courses and programs but also in the degrees I have pursued and obtained: BA in Elementary Education, M.Ed. in Multicultural/Bilingual Education, Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction w/ a specialization in Bilingual Education.

Global Learning FPLC Activities Experienced

Emphasis has been on gaining a greater understanding of global issues through interdisciplinary perspective. We met bi-monthly and focussed our discussions on:

  • Defining Global Learning
  • Poverty
  • Immigration

We compiled resources for our faculty, students, and staff to use in and outside of the classroom.

Reflection on my Experience in the Global Learning FPLC

I greatly appreciated the opportunity to regularly interact with other MCC employees from a variety of employee groups. Our similar interest in global learning yet diverse backgrounds provided a rich atmosphere for sharing/gaining insights/ideas. The discussions generated within our bi-monthly meetings helped to enrich my current approaches to facilitating student learning by expanding/deepening my own way of thinking about global issues.

Final Reflection on Global Learning in Teaching and Learning

I am very grateful for the opportunity to have participated in the Global Learning FPLC. While I deeply value the vast knowledge and experience of my colleagues, I often find myself too busy with other tasks and responsibilities to partake in extended conversations with them. The FPLC experience provided specific time periods during which I not only got to endulge in scholarly conversations with my peers but where we focussed on specific topics of mutual interest that would result in opportunities to more deeply reflect on implications for our own approach to teaching and student learning. Exploring topics from a variety of disciplinary perspectives added depth and breadth to our own perspectives and provided us with a variety of resources to tap for further learning.
