XYZ FPLC Background
Our community was formed to rethink the study of the humanities, given the current demographics of the student population and current emphasis on the sciences and workforce preparation. We have spent our first year attempting to identify the issues related to humanities studies, define terms and identify outcomes. Our work with the FPLC has been challenging, insightful and meaningful.
My Initial Views on XYZ
As a teacher of literature and film--along with developmental English and composition--I was interested in working with other people who hold a vested interest in the Humanities. In recent years, it has seemed like college and university students have been almost discouraged from enrolling in humanities (i.e., "extra") courses, and I find this trend to be troubling. As a society, I think we don't really consider how much the humanities encompass--from popular to "high brow" culture--and I don't think one's experience in higher education can be complete with exposure to and engagement with the humanities.
XYZ FPLC Activities Experienced
We had retreats in both August and January with all of the other FPLCs, and those were fulfilling, as we were able to learn about the progress of the other learning communities. We also met every two weeks for our two-hour meetings, and towards the end of the spring semester, we had a weekend dinner out where we could enjoy one another's company on a purely social level.

Final Reflection on XYZ in Teaching and Learning
Most of all, I've enjoyed the collegial aspect of being involved in an FPLC. Getting to know colleagues from different disciplines has been both educational and gratifying. We always had plenty to discuss at our meetings, and fortunately, no one was shy about sharing his/her opinion(s). I know the Humanities' FPLC will continue to challenge its members, and more intriguing and engaging discussions are sure to follow!!
