Project Rationale
American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language. Since there is no written form, the most effective way to provide language samples is through video. Until now, most of the video used for my classes is limited to highly proprietary DVD/video that students purchase with their text book. I would like to be able to improve my instructional delivery and enhance supplemental learning materials by learning how to “produce” my own DVDs, and/or multimedia instructional materials. With the guidance of the CTL and the help desk, I have been able to purchase state-of-the-art equipment that will allow me to create multi-media productions; however, my time limitations have not allowed me to actually learn how to use my equipment. Kaleidoscope would allow me the necessary time and CTL would provide the expertise to help me learn the art of multi-media production and its application to instructional design. Learning video authoring and delivery workflow will enhance learning for ASL ground classes and will be an essential part of providing more creative delivery platforms in the future. As my department explores ways to offer creative and innovative delivery models to meet the needs of today’s college student, the best way for my discipline to be included in this advancement is to provide learning opportunities for students outside of the traditional classroom. I believe video is the only way to accomplish this for ASL.
Once I have mastered learning multi-media design and delivery I can serve as a resource for the other language teachers in my department; particularly those who also teach ASL.
