Project Goals

Create a simple interface to allow instructors to request the recording of television programs for instructional needs via a free open source DVR (Digital Video Recorder) technology, and then provide a way to stream that television program to students enrolled in classes offered by the college while maintaining copyright and fair use as outlined within the confines of the TEACH act signed into law in 2002

Project Timeline

  • Ongoing as needed to experiment

Current Status

  • MythTV hardware and software is installed and deployed in MCC Media Services department where cable trunk is located

Future Directions

  • Need time and staff to write the interface to give the process a seamless user interface
  • Need to further define policies governing the saving of television programs so they aren't archived and accessible longer than legally allowed
  • Need to find a way to transcode saved programs into a format that can be deployed from college streaming media server under the confines of the TEACH act

Project Resources

  • Hardware for the MythTV software which is free
  • Yearly subscription to channel programming feeds so that users can find and select television programs for recording (usually about $20/year)
  • Personnel with expertise to define and devise the software experience
  • Instructional technologist input to govern the effective use for teaching and learning

Project Outcomes

  • Time and money saved by the institution
  • Effective instruction to distance learners
  • Experiential gain of skills by all technologists involved (both within the CTL, and Media Services)
