My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is very much intertwined with the love I have for nursing. I believe that all patients deserve a healthcare provider who is competent, compassionate, and caring. With that in mind, I believe that I need to be a role model in my teaching of student nurses. I need to reflect these three ‘Cs’ in my interactions with the students I teach as well as with my patients. I believe that the very best teachers are those who teach with caring first, those who empower and motivate the students with a positive, ‘I can succeed’ approach. I first have to believe in the possibility of success for my students. And I believe that my passion for nursing should be reflected in what, and in how, I teach. I believe that I have to give of myself and my experiences to be an effective teacher. I have to be engaged to expect engagement. And in the end, the goal is to help mold a nursing student into the very best kind of nurse, one who cares for those who cannot care for themselves – one who believes in the possibility of success for his/her patients as well as for himself/herself.
Reflection on Scholarly Teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
I believe that I need to be actively engaged in finding and utilizing opportunities for personal growth and development in both the areas of nursing and teaching. I believe that keeping current in the nursing profession is critical to my ability to teach concepts through personal experience. I believe that my students also enhance their learning through the personal experiences they gain while providing patient care and that this is a crucial part of their formal nursing education.
Understanding of MCC Culture Gained through NFE
Through the MCC Center for Teaching and Learning, The New Faculty Experience has been invaluable as I have tried to integrate myself into the MCC culture. In the midst of adjusting to the new environment, the NFE has been a quiet place of reflection and guidance and has consistently given me ready access to resources I might not have found on my own, as well as providing a monthly forum for support and feedback from a group of my peers. I would like to especially thank Jonelle Moore for sharing an experienced perspective on MCC and guidance on how to navigate the rapids. :)
Impact of NFE on my Approach to Teaching
The New Faculty Experience has offered opportunities to evaluate my methods and rationale for the “how” behind my teaching and has caused me to look much deeper into the why. I believe that I have gained great insight from the introspection that the NFE encouraged. I believe my teaching reflects a greater emphasis on teaching from the heart by utilizing personal experience and stories, and that as a result, I am the recipient of learning as much, if not more, than my students.
Reflection on my Experience in the NFE Community
I have so enjoyed the opportunity to gather with other new MCC faculty from both nursing and other disciplines. The NFE has provided a forum for discussion and feedback that has been very helpful, in a safe environment designed to be both empowering and supportive. It is a wonderful sense of community!
Reflection on My Future as a Member of the MCC Community
I am very grateful to be a part of the MCC Community. I believe that MCC epitomizes the very, very best in both faculty and administration. I look forward to being a vital part of the future of the MCC Nursing Program and it is my hope that I will be a positive voice of progress as we work through the many upcoming changes and challenges designed to improve our nursing program and the quality of nurses produced through our system.
I also look forward to being a positive influence on the MCC Campus through interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculty members, with the common goal to grow and refine the MCC model throughout our community.
