My Teaching Philosophy

Each student is an individual learner. One method only will not enhance learning in all students. I must strive to continually diversify my teaching techniques and continue to ask for feedback from my students. The classroom must be kept "alive" and interactive for learning to take place. I am responsible for that "pulse". I must continue to learn new teaching methods, adopt appropriate teaching tools, and most of all be a good listener to my students.

Reflection on Scholarly Teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Scholarly teaching is a responsibility of all instructors. I learned that the best instructors continually gain education and insight on effective teaching methods and evaluating if there is learning actually taking place in their classroom. We can only be the best teachers if our students are the best learners!

Understanding of MCC Culture Gained through NFE

Without the NFE I would not be very knowledgable about the culture and varied resources that MCC has to offer. I learned that the students in our community come first, and effective learning is our goal at MCC. It was so nice to hear all the other faculty from the various departments supporting this goal.

Impact of NFE on my Approach to Teaching

NFE provided me with a forum of learning about teaching. Through reflective journal reviews, sharing of ideas, and the promotion of "thinking outside of the box", I believe I became a better teacher this second semester.

Reflection on my Experience in the NFE Community

What a joy it was to meet other faculty from different departments! I learned so much from everyone. Each person had a story, and years of experience to share. I was also impressed at how tough it is to become residential faculty at MCC. I learned we have only the "cream of the crop" working here, and I am very proud of that. I also want to say how wonderful it was to have a mentor like Jonelle Moore! She guided us through some interesting and sometimes tough discussions, and made us all better faculty.

Reflection on My Future as a Member of the MCC Community

I look forward to becoming an integral part of the MCC community through meaningful committee work, continued syllabus improvement, and a being devoted educator. I made the right decision to move from the corporate world to academia, and I as so glad I was chosen to be part of the MCC family!
