MCC New Faculty Experience Reflections, My Name, My Department, Mesa Community College, Contact me (mailto:myemail)
Throughout my career as an instructor, I have seen my teaching philosophy evolve. In the beginning, it was merely to facilitate learning for those in my classroom. At this point, however, I strive to instruct, facilitate and create an inclusive learning community. It is important for students to find their voices, and to believe that their voices can indeed be heard. In order to accomplish this, all must feel as though their presence in the classroom and the community in general is valued. By implementing a teaching style that values diversity and inclusion, those with the desire to learn and grow will feel empowered to do so.
I consider myself a lifelong learner. It is essential to be informed of new developments within the field of teaching in general, and more specifically the field of teaching composition. In order to be the most effective in the classroom, it is also important to increase one's knowledge of learning. Therefore, I make a conscious effort to seek out knew and innovative strategies for both teaching and learning.
As we become increasingly busy in our own departments, often we are unaware of the range of knowledge and the diversity of the people on the MCC campus. The New Faculty Experience gave me the opportunity to, not only increase my awareness, but also my appreciation of the community as a whole.
The greatest impact on my approach to teaching, gained from the NFE, is in the area of awareness. I believe I have become much more self-reflective in my teaching.
Jonelle did a great job putting all of this together. The speakers who came in offered valuable insight as to the future expectations of and the opportunities available to faculty at MCC.
In addition, we had great food and great people with whom to spend the afternoon.
It is with sadness that I am unable to reflect on my continued future as residential faculty at MCC. As a one-year only employee, I will return to adjunct status as of May 11. However, one thing is certain, MCC is the place I wish to work. I believe my future is here. The diversity of the student body, the commitment of the faculty and staff, and my participation in the NFE have all contributed to that desire.
