Incorporating "New" Technologies into your Teaching & Learning Practices FPLC Background
The Keeping Up with the Jetsons FPLC was designed as a group who explored the processes of identifying, incorporating, and assessing how faculty incorporate "new" technologies into teaching and learning. Instead of focusing on any one particular technology, we discuss more generic processes for exploring new technologies and assessing whether or not they will better facilitate student learning.
My Initial Views on Experience in Incorporating "New" Technologies into your Teaching & Learning Practices FPLC
My first computer was a Commodore 64 where I played role playing games with my cousins circa 1983. My first PC was in 1992; it was a P100 and cost me $4,000.00. I used Word Perfect and was tickled pink when I got Windows 3.1 (I think it came on about a dozen diskettes.) Here I am 15 years later. Bought my first Mac Book Pro this summer, after my 2 1/2 year old spilled coffee in my old laptop (RIP). I teach AP Language in high school full time, and I am adjunct here at MCC. I teach online Eng 102 and hybrid (blended?) Eng 102. This year I required all students to use Google Apps, including gMail, gTalk, gDocs, Groups, etc...
Even though the background above may not seem pertinent to this FPLC, it's truly an extension of my background. When I discovered this FPLC, I immediately sent in my application. Technology now pumps through my blood and is an extension of my whole being. I am quickly becoming what Donna Harraway calls the Cyborg: a technological extension of the material body.
Slap the computer in my brain and send me out into the classrooms.
My Goals or Hopes for My Incorporating "New" Technologies into your Teaching & Learning Practices FPLC Experience
- To continue to implement new and developing technologies into my everyday composition instruction.
- To assist students in synthesizing various technologies in their composition practices.
- To critique new technologies and choose which to introduce into my curriculum.
- To reframe what it means to teach a "composition class" in the 21st century.

Reflection on my Experience in Incorporating "New" Technologies into your Teaching & Learning Practices FPLC
This professional learning community has forced me to explore some of the new technologies that I may have just skipped over as I came across them. This space also allows me to incorporate my technophilic self into my I-gotta-get-paid,-son-self, which is always a good time.
