My Initial Views on New Technology FPLC

Having participated in the Podcasting FPLC[2] during the 2006-7 academic year, I committed again for the 2007-8 academic year to continue my experiences with FPLC.

In the fall semester (as co-facilitator) I was able to dedicate additional time to learning about new technologies in order to propose a variety of topic discussions for the community.

Meeting notes and discussions posts were kept up-to-date on our FPLC's public online wiki page[3].

My Goals or Hopes for New Technology FPLC Experience

I initially started with wanting to facilitate a survey to study the climate of current technologies on campus - who is using technology, what tools are being used, how are students adapting to tech-trends, etc. But unfortunately, this ended up taking a back burner to the grant funding received to research the impact of using RSS feeds in classrooms.

Key goals or interests:

- How new technologies impact student learning in health education

- How new technologies impact health behavior change

New Technology FPLC Activities Experienced

I had two main goals during the fall semester:

- Wikis: As a way to have more experiences playing with wikis, I created a personal wiki[4] to document the challenges and advantages of a wiki. I found that a wiki was not very conducive to tracking FPLC experiences (better done on a blog). A wiki seems to work better as a platform for collaborative information (i.e. such was the case in our FPLC online wiki).

- Blogs: I've had previous experiences about blogging, but wanted to deepen my knowledge about blogging culture. I read the following books to gain a broader understanding of the blogosphere:

1) Growing Up Digital

2) Interface Culture

3) Blog! How the Newest media revolution is changing politics, business, and culture

4) Blog: Understanding the Information reformation that's changing your world

5) We've Got Blog

6) Naked Conversations

7) Who Let the Blogs Out

Reflection on my Experience in New Technology FPLC

Fall Semester Reflection: Discussing new and current technologies was an important objective for this semester. Before implementing any of these technologies into a classroom setting, a broad understanding was necessary. We were able to select those that might be applicable to our discipline.

Spring Semester Reflection: (will be posted at a later date)

Final Reflection on New Technology in Teaching and Learning

Overall Reflection: (coming at the conclusion of semester)
