Podcasting FPLC Background

Specifically, the podcasting FPLC is about experimentation and research in the area of podcasting for higher education. As part of our work together during the 2006/2007 school year, the Podcasting FPLC group:

  • Researched and read a variety of articles
  • Discussed aspects of podcasting in general and the use of media in higher education specifically
  • Searched for and listened to a variety of podcasts, both education and non-education related
  • Experimented with different technologies to deliver podcasts
  • Planned and implemented podcasting projects in our discipline areas

My Initial Views on Podcasting

I came into this FPLC with a limited understanding on the culture surrounding podcasting. Although the production aspects of creating podcasts/mp3 were familiar to me, the integration of podcasts into the teaching environment was an area I hadn't explored.

This FPLC exposed me to the ways podcasting was being utilized in the academic arena.

Podcasting FPLC Activities Experienced

For me, the majority of this year's events focused on developing an understanding for the uses of podcasts. I was able to learn how to search for podcasts, obtain a list of recommended podcasts, and listen to a variety of podcasts (although I'v only hit the tip of the iceberg).

We were encouraged to create our own podcasting project over the year. Although I had several ideas on incorporating podcasts in the Exercise Science department, I felt more exploration was needed to determine podcasting needs within our department. Some of my ideas may not have suited the department's agenda and may have been too overwhelming to complete within one semester.

Reflection on my Experience in Podcasting FPLC

I enjoyed the FPLC experience primarily because this was my first opportunity participating on a committee with members spanning various academic disciplines. It was refreshing to hear the different ideas and applications for podcasting, but confirming to know that we all shared similar end-goals of improved teaching and increased learning.

Final Reflection on Podcasting in Teaching and Learning

Clearly the Podcasting FPLC has made an impact on my involvement as a teacher. It has increased my interest beyond podcasting and motivated me to explore further ways that technology can enhance teaching and learning.
