WebCT Training, Documentation, and Instructor Support

Project Summary: WebCT is the course management system that Mesa Communication College uses for both online courses and for supplementary materials for face-to-face courses. Training, support, and documentation is provided daily for faculty wanting to learn and use WebCT with their students.

Project Goals

  • Provide face-to-face support, online support, phone support, and documentation support to instructors using WebCT.
  • Continuously evaluate and update documentation related to the use of WebCT to make it more effective.
  • Continuously evaluate, improve, and test strategies in communicating with and between WebCT faculty.

Project Staff

  • Melanie Kroening, Peggy Johnson, Donna Gaudet, Jeffrey Anderson, and Nicole Lohrbeer provide training and support to instructors using WebCT.
  • Technical Support Services also provides support to instructors and students using WebCT. If they are unable to solve a problem, they forward it to the CTL.
  • Donna sends out weekly WebCT Tips.

Project Timeline

  • Implement the migration plan for the major upgrade from WebCT 3.8 to WebCT 6.0 in the summer and fall of 2006.
  • Create new documentation for all workshops and WebCT tasks, create a website to house all documents, create hands-on-video training for the most frequently asked questions about this new version of WebCT in the Fall of 2006.
  • Continuously train and support several hundred new and existing instructors in the development of their online and in-person WebCT courses.
  • Evaluate the rebranding of WebCT in the Spring of 2007 and plan for a training/awareness of the rebranding.
  • Update documentation in the Spring of 2007 to include the changes of the newest upgrade.
  • Send out weekly WebCT tips in Spring 2007 to improve communication with WebCT faculty.

Project Resources

  • Staff time to train, support, and develop documentation in the use of WebCT.
  • Software to improve documentation practices.
  • Software to allow faculty to be more self-suffient in the creation and maintenance of their WebCT courses.

Project Outcomes and Future Directions

  • Continuous evaluation of current documentation, training, and support.
  • Continuous planning for the improvement of documentation, training, and support.
  • Planning for changes in documentation, training, and support due to changes in WebCT and/or changes in staffing.
