Project Summary: The WebCT 6.0 CE product is always under development. IT and the CTL work continuously and closely together to test, maintain, integrate, and improve performance of the WebCT server and it's software.

Project Goals

  • Maintain and upgrade the WebCT course management system.
  • Minimize downtime of the system and work continuously to improve performance, stability, and redundancy of the system.

Relation to CTL Department Plan Initiatives

Project Staff

  • Wade Harris and Chris Silvertooth maintain and support the database server and application server for WebCT.
  • Wade Harris and Melanie Kroening and Martin Lehner program the code that integrates WebCT with LDAP, integrates WebCT with the portal, integrates WebCT with other programs (through the PowerLinks), and integrates the portal with SIS.
  • Wade Harris and Melanie Kroening and Martin Lehner test, evaluate, and implement the application packs, service packs, and hotfixes as they are released.
  • Wade Harris and Melanie Kroening and Martin Lehner test upgrades to the database software and the OS software.
  • Wade Harris and Melanie Kroening and Martin Lehner maintain a secondary database and application server for testing.

Project Timeline

  • Major migration of content from WebCT 3.8 to WebCT 6.0 during the Summer of 2006.
  • Reprogram the integration of WebCT to the portal and from the portal to SIS.
  • Upgrade to Application Pack 1 + hotfixes prior to Fall of 2006.
  • Testing of Service Pack 1 and Application Pack 2 during Spring of 2007.
  • Installation of Application Pack 2 (and/or Service Pack 1) prior to Summer 2007.
  • Investigate and test a variety of PowerLinks to integrate other tools with WebCT.
  • Investigate and evaluate the upgrade path from Oracle 9 to Oracle 10.
  • Investigate a process that would allow us to replicate the data and setup of the production server for improved testing.

Project Resources

  • Server space for the WebCT production database server and application server, server space for the WebCT testing database server and application server, server space for a WebCT beta testing database server and application server.
  • Annual WebCT fee and clustering fee.
  • Oracle license and Red Hat OS license for production and test servers.
  • Staff time in IT and the CTL.

Project Outcomes and Future Directions

  • Continuously test, innovate with, maintain, adjust, upgrade the servers and and programs and software associated with WebCT.
